A hallway is the first thing people see and the last thing most of us decorate. Four inexpensive changes that make it feel considered.
The hallway is where the house says hello. It is also the place where coats, shoes and post pile up, so a few small, practical changes make a big difference.
An overhead bulb makes a hallway look flat. A small wall light or a motion sensor light bar adds warmth, and it comes on when you walk in so you never fumble for a switch.
A woven basket by the door keeps shoes, scarves and bags off the floor. Pick one that looks good, because it will be the first thing people see.
If the hall has a cupboard or a spare wall, a tall shelving unit keeps the rest of the house tidy. Fix it to the wall if there are children in the house.
A clock, a garland or a set of candles gives the eye somewhere to land. One good object does more than five small ones.
